a good cause…

I met Katie 10 years ago when we were both exchange students living in Australia. We quickly became good friends. Even though we have only seen each other a handful of times since then (she’s been living in various states in the U.S.), we have always managed to keep in touch.

I was super excited when Katie informed me she was going to join the Peace Corps as I remember her talking about it 10 years ago as something she would like to do some day. She is now one year in to a two-year placement in Estero de Platano, Ecuador, and it sounds like she is doing a wonderful job and having an amazing experience. I highly recommend checking out her new blog, lakatita, as she chronicles her experiences.

Right now Katie is collecting money for three special students she has gotten to know and care for. Each of these students is approaching high school but comes from a situation where their family may not be able to pay the $200 US that a high school education costs. If you can afford to give anything, even $5, this is definitely a worthwhile cause. You can read more about these students on her blog. There is a link on my sidebar under “Friends and Links” or you can click through here.

Here is her latest update:

Hello friends and family,

So far $500 have been raised from contributions!! $100 away from sending the 3 kids that I talked about to high school this year. I know times are tight at home with the economy… but the smallest amount will make a huge difference in their lives.

It’s really fast and easy to donate – especially if you already have a paypal account. Keep in mind that donations are in American dollars. Thanks!
